The SB2C Helldiver was a key dive bomber during WWII and served until the 1950s. Although it spent more time in testing than in combat early on, by mid-1944, the SB2C-4 became the standard for bombing and scouting. It was later replaced by the improved SB2C-5, which continued in service until the Douglas AD Skyraider took over.
The SB2C-4 saw action in the Pacific, even flying missions to Tokyo. Some versions were equipped with radar antennas or pods, while others flew without them.
Academy’s 1/72 scale SB2C-4 Helldiver kit has been reissued and is highly regarded for its detail. It features:
- Detailed front and rear cockpits
- Positionable bomb bay doors, flaps, dive brakes, and canopies
- Crew restraint decals
- Decals for three aircraft from the Battle of Okinawa (Operation Iceberg)
The kit includes both plastic parts and photo-etched dive brakes for extra detail. It's still one of the best 1/72 Helldiver kits available and remains a good value, with only a slight price increase over the past six years.
