The F-4 Phantom was originally designed as an interceptor and air superiority fighter for the US Navy and was capable of speeds of up to Mach 2.

It was designed without guns, relying on it's missile armament.

Over Vietnam the missiles proved far less reliable than expected so later versions were fitted with an internal cannon and gun pods used in the meantime.
